This tall cylindrical vase, tapering gently to a splayed foot, unrolls a spring outing along a lakeshore. Holiday-makers drift in boats and rest before tea-houses beneath cherry trees in full blossom, with a range of mountains closing the distance. The scene is painted on a clear, crackled ground. At the shoulder a collar of chrysanthemum heads is bordered by dots within circles, while standing-petal reserves filled with flowers rise from a geometric band at the foot.
Even the rim and the outer edge of the foot are painted, with fine scrolling vines and chrysanthemums, a typical example of the studio’s refusal to leave any visible surface undecorated. A closely related tall vase with boating and a shrine under cherry blossom was offered by Bonhams in 2026. The vase is signed on the underside in gilt ‘Yabu Meizan’. Offered at Bonhams, Japanese and Korean Art, New York, on 21 September 2022, lot 711. It realised US$20,400 including buyer’s premium, against an estimate of US$10,000–US$15,000.
