The Meizan parade
The small figures that sometimes cross the bottom of the page are of two kinds.
Elephant, ox, frog, lizard porter and stag beetle: details adapted (cut out, background removed, gilt glow added) from photographs of works by Yabu Meizan in the Khalili Collection of Japanese Art (S 4, S 148, S 107). Khalili Collections, CC BY-SA 4.0, via Wikimedia Commons. The adapted images are shared under the same licence.
Rabbit: adapted from “Portrait of a Rabbit” (1867), a surimono by Yabu Chōsui, Meizan’s father (not by Meizan), Art Institute of Chicago 1972.1434, CC0.
All other characters are original illustrations made for this site.
