A deep bowl on a ring foot, with nearly vertical sides, this is a fine example of one of the studio’s most characteristic forms. A continuous scene runs around the exterior. Fishermen in boats haul in their nets, a group of travellers rests before a lakeside tea-house, and distant mountains lead the eye to the horizon, all above stands of chrysanthemums. The rim and foot carry bands of chevrons and blossoms. Inside, branches of autumn maple hang from the rim.

Bonhams compared the bowl with deep bowls of the same size and shape in the Khalili Collection, published in Impey and Fairley’s catalogue (1995) as nos. 66 and 83. It is signed on the foot in gilt ‘Yabu Meizan’. Offered at Bonhams, Japanese and Korean Art, New York, on 21 September 2022, lot 712. It realised US$25,500 including buyer’s premium, against an estimate of US$25,000–US$35,000.
