This deep bowl has straight sides that taper to a low ring foot and flare slightly at the mouth. Its exterior carries a continuous frieze of a fishing village set against a distant mountain range. Below runs a band of millefleurs punctuated by roundels of stylised dragons. Geometric and floral lozenges ornament the rim, and chevrons and dots the foot.
The interior turns from landscape to nature in miniature, with butterflies beneath a border of blossoming flowers and a key-fret band. Bonhams cited a very similar deep bowl in the Khalili Collection, published by Impey and Fairley (1995) as no. 29, as a comparison. The bowl is signed on the foot in gilt ‘Yabu Meizan’. Offered at Bonhams, Fine Japanese and Korean Art, New York, on 20 September 2023, lot 733. It realised US$8,960 including buyer’s premium, against an estimate of US$10,000–US$15,000.
