This globular jar has a narrow vertical mouth and a tall lid crowned by a shishi, the mythical lion-dog, boldly decorated in gilt and blue enamel. Around the body a group of ladies enjoy a boating party on a lotus pond. The shoulder and foot are each ringed with twelve lappets enclosing floral and geometric designs.
The jar is signed underneath in gilt ‘Meizan sei’ (made by Meizan), a shorter form of signature than the more common ‘Yabu Meizan’. It was offered by Bonhams Cornette de Saint Cyr in Paris, where it was catalogued in both French and English. Offered at Bonhams, Fine Japanese Art, Paris Avenue Hoche, on 15 October 2025, lot 2. It realised €2,048 including buyer’s premium, against an estimate of €1,200–€1,800.
