Leonard Joel catalogued this fine-quality bowl, signed Yabu Meizan, as decorated with a sankin-kōtai procession. Under that system of alternate attendance, feudal lords travelled with their retinues to and from Edo, and the subject is closely related to the daimyō processions so often painted by the studio. On the reverse are butterflies and grasses, a quieter counterpart to the crowded procession. The bowl measures thirteen centimetres in diameter.
It came from the collection of Dr Lee Price of Maleny, Queensland, and had previously passed through Leonard Joel in November 2010 (lot 505). It sold for A$8,000 in a timed online sale in September 2026. The auction house does not state whether that figure includes buyer’s premium. Because the currency is not supported by the archive’s price fields, the sale is recorded here rather than in the auction table.
