Photographed for the official Japanese fine-art catalogue of the 1904 Louisiana Purchase Exposition, where it was listed as “Basin, of Flowers and Birds patterns, Pottery. By Yabu (Meizan), Osaka.” The plate shows a deep basin on a carved stand, with a large cartouche of a festival procession escorting a towering float, framed by dense brocade grounds. Its present whereabouts are not recorded.
Identification note: the catalogue caption calls the pattern “flowers and birds”, but the visible panel is a festival procession; the caption may refer to the reverse.
Caveat. The 1904 St Louis catalogue caption describes this basin as having “Flowers and Birds patterns”, but the photograph shows a festival procession escorting a float. The caption and the image may therefore not match. The basin is kept here on the strength of the catalogue’s attribution “By Yabu (Meizan), Osaka.”
