This small vase has a globular body on a short circular foot and a thin neck that opens to a flared mouth. Over a crackled transparent glaze, a central band shows boats in a rural landscape. The shoulder and lower body are given over to flowers, so the landscape seems to be framed by a garden. The decoration is in polychrome enamels and gilt, the studio’s standard palette.
At under twelve centimetres high, the vase is typical of the cabinet-sized pieces that formed much of the studio’s export production, made to be examined closely in the hand. It is signed on the base. Offered at Christie’s, Japanese and Korean Art, New York, on 21 March 2023, lot 75. It realised US$9,500 including buyer’s premium, against an estimate of US$12,000–US$22,000.
