This tall bowl, just under ten centimetres high, carries a daimyō procession around its exterior. The formal journey of a feudal lord and his retinue was a subject the studio painted in many variations and on many scales. The interior is decorated with wisteria, giving a quieter contrast to the busy figure scene outside. A busy figure scene outside with a single plant or insect motif within is a recurring pairing in the studio’s bowls, as the Khalili festival bowl with butterflies inside also shows.
The bowl was offered in Christie’s New York sale of Japanese and Korean art in March 2025, alongside a companion bowl with a cherry-blossom viewing scene. It is signed on the base. Offered at Christie’s, Japanese and Korean Art, New York, on 18 March 2025, lot 191. It realised US$5,500 including buyer’s premium, against an estimate of US$6,000–US$8,000.
