This oviform vase, with an everted neck and foot, is painted on a crackled cream ground with branches of coloured maple hanging elegantly down the body. The single motif, set against open ground, is the kind of restrained seasonal decoration that the studio used for many of its smaller vases. Maple is among the studio’s most frequent seasonal motifs, appearing also on the British Museum’s sencha service and the Khalili fluted bowl.
The vase was offered in Christie’s online Art of Japan sale in London in May 2017, in the same sale as a rectangular four-panel vase. It is 18.6 centimetres high, with a gilt seal on the base. Offered at Christie’s, Art of Japan Online, London, on 3 May 2017, lot 75. It realised £3,000 including buyer’s premium, against an estimate of £3,000–£4,000.
