We welcome enquiries from collectors, museums, dealers and researchers about works attributed to Yabu Meizan and his studio. This page explains what we can help with and how to send an enquiry that we can usefully answer.
How we can help
Attribution and research
We can compare a piece’s mark, decoration and form with the documented examples in this archive: museum records, published catalogues and verified auction results. We can also point to the relevant literature.
Appraisal
For a valuation, for insurance, estate or sale, we can refer you to the verified public record of comparable results and, on request, to qualified independent appraisers.
Consignment
If you are considering selling, we can discuss suitable routes to market and the documentation that buyers and auction houses will expect.
What to include
A useful enquiry includes:
- clear, well-lit photographs of the whole piece from several angles, the base and mark, and close-ups of the decoration;
- dimensions in centimetres;
- a description of the condition, including any restoration, cracks or wear to the gilding;
- everything you know of its history: previous owners, purchase receipts, exhibition labels, old inventory numbers or auction references.
Please note
Opinions given in response to enquiries are informal and based on the images and information supplied. They are not a certificate of authenticity, a formal appraisal or a guarantee of value. Marks can be copied, and the Meizan name was imitated in the artist’s own lifetime, so no attribution can be confirmed from photographs of a mark alone. Formal authentication requires examination of the object by a qualified specialist. We do not quote prices or estimates on this page.
